Heart Disease is the #1 Killer of Women in America
Heart disease remains the number one killer of women in the United States. One in three women lose their lives to cardiovascular disease and stroke each year according to the latest statistics from the American Heart Association. This is more deaths than are caused by all forms of cancer combined.
The reasons for this statistic are multifaceted - from lack of awareness and education around women's unique heart attack symptoms, to disparities in prevention and treatment between men and women. Cultural narratives dismiss heart health as an “older man's” issue which contributes to the knowledge gap for women.
Organizations like Go Red for Women advocate for research, encourage knowledge-sharing between women patients, provide more holistic cardio care tailored to women patients, and spread awareness so we can begin closing this health gap for good. Every woman should inform herself and those she cares about to protect against heart disease risks as much as possible – it’s literally a matter of life or death.
The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.
